Nibble Nibble Gnaw 2025
Performance during Performance Cluster 2025: Discipline / Desire / Surveillance in MAXXI National Museum of XXI Century Arts,
Rome, Italy
Long durational performance - 5 days
Nibble Nibble Gnaw repositions the Witch of Hansel and Gretel within the logic of contemporary surveillance. Over five days, the artist inhabited a dimly lit, quasi-bureaucratic station where visitors were issued numbered tickets, scanned QR codes, and entered a system of seemingly objective evaluation. When summoned, each participant received a printed “verdict” and a red stamp—INEDIBLE—a cold echo of administrative judgment.
By merging Slovak folklore, post-communist bureaucratic memory, and digital data culture, the work transforms the fairy tale’s motifs into a minimalist ritual of scrutiny. The oven becomes a scanner, the gingerbread house a checkpoint, and the forest a white-cube maze of observation. Through the Witch’s sustained presence, Nibble Nibble Gnaw exposes the quiet violence of systems that classify without consuming, without nourishing, and render subjects visible only to dismiss them.
