Masticare la Lingua 2024

Masticare la Lingua (To Chew a Language) Performed at the annual Performance Cluster: Beyond the Pale, RUFA SPACE, Via Degli Ausoni 7, Rome, Italy.

Masticare la Lingua operates as a somatic response to linguistic fragmentation — an embodied reflection on the myth of Babel, where a shared tongue was shattered and scattered. Here, the mouth becomes a site of articulation and refusal, of generative violence and material translation. Twenty – four lingua di fuoco beans standing for a living or dying language, were chosen to mark a full rotation — the temporal cycle through which linguistic memory is preserved, distorted, or erased — are chewed, spat, and embedded into earth. Language is not spoken but planted; not performed but composted into the ecological. The audience is invited to water the seeds — or not — rendering growth or disappearance contingent, mirroring the precarious futures of real – world languages. Through this quiet ritual, this performance reframes language as unstable, embodied, and alive: a system to be ingested, reconfigured, and re – rooted.
